History
The name "Itaipu" is derived from an island near the construction site, and in the Guarani language, it means "the sounding stone." This awe-inspiring structure, stretching 7,919 meters in length and rising 196 meters in height, was built across the border between Brazil and Paraguay. Itaipu generates 95% of Paraguay's energy and 24% of Brazil's energy consumption, making it a critical power source for both nations. As of 2020, it was the second-largest electricity producer globally, surpassed only by China’s Three Gorges Dam.
Since the first generator came online in 1984, Itaipu has consistently broken records for energy production and revenue generation, solidifying its place as a vital player in the world’s energy sector.
